Reviving the I-Ching

An ancient instrument, put back into working order. Not studied, not admired — used.

The I-Ching did not fall out of use because it was disproved. It fell out of use because the culture that could hold it fell apart, and what survived came to us in two unusable forms: an academic object studied by specialists, and a novelty sold alongside horoscopes.

Both are deaths. A practice that nobody performs is not preserved by being catalogued.

I presumed, when I first encountered its force in 2020, that this was self-evident — that the inquisitive people of earth would simply bring it back into practice on their own. They did not, and I lost the thread myself for six years. Returning to it in 2026 is what convinced me the work has to be done deliberately by someone.

Three strands

  • Teaching it as practice

A course, workshops and 1:1 consultation, built so that people leave able to cast and read on their own. The measure of the teaching is that it ends.

  • Writing the objections down

The sceptical case against the I-Ching is strong and deserves an honest answer rather than a dismissal. Most of what I publish is an attempt at that answer.

    Read the writing
  • Returning it to daily use

Not scholarship about a book, and not a parlour trick. The aim is a living practice with a journal attached, checkable against your own life over years.
