What this system is

An oracle in continuous use for three thousand years

This system was used by Hermann Hesse and Carl Jung, who not only practised it openly but discussed its repercussions between themselves.

Jung viewed it as a way of communicating with the collective unconscious, and formulated it as an action for understanding and experiencing the underlying synchronicity with the universe.

Nobel Prize Winner Herman Hesse showed, in the masterpiece he wrote over thirteen years, that a futuristic society of intellectuals would not ignore the subtle but sure effects of the I-Ching — the ways in which we can directly interact with the energies of cosmic order.

The giants who practised it

Two of the most careful minds of the last century kept this book on the desk, used it, and wrote about what it did to them.

Jung kept the I-Ching for more than thirty years, and wrote the foreword to the Wilhelm translation that most of the English-speaking world still reads. He treated a casting as a way of reaching the collective unconscious, and built the idea of synchronicity partly out of what he found doing it.

The Glass Bead Game — Hesse spent thirteen years writing it, and put the I-Ching at the centre: Joseph Knecht studies the oracle in the Bamboo Grove before he can be trusted with anything else. It was Hesse’s argument that a future society of intellectuals would not discard this, but return to it.

Their practice is not the argument, and I do not offer it as one. I mention them only because the first reaction to the I-Ching is usually that no serious mind has ever taken it seriously.

How I came to it

I first saw its subtle but very powerful force in 2020. I witnessed big changes in myself directly while using the I-Ching in everyday life, across a span of only three months. I never thought I would become a teacher of this ancient system of consulting the oracle of cosmic order. I presumed its force was self-evident, and that the inquisitive people of earth would bring it back into practice on their own. I was also in a period of life where I was trying many other things, and moving around a great deal, and I lost contact with the practice.

On many occasions I wanted to resume, but the intention could not translate into action. Six years later, while working on a life-changing cryptocurrency project and sculpting it for the world, I took a break and consulted the I-Ching. I was surprised once again. I was wonderstruck at how accurately it had pointed to my own tugging at cosmic order, and at what it wanted to show me. That is where I made the decision to become a regular practitioner.

Why it is easy to miss?

Subtle enough to escape attention entirely

The value of this wisdom is so subtle, and yet so powerful, that its importance can be completely lost on us. It is like breathing — utterly consequential to the parasympathetic system and to our perception of any moment, and yet it escapes our attention entirely.

Our brain's instinct is to reject it immediately as hocus-pocus. We can lean on giants like Hesse and Jung, who were also practitioners of this system. But the trust and belief of anyone, even giants, should not be the benchmark for trusting anything. Only practice and acute self-observation are the yardstick by which to measure any system.

Freedom from distorting symbols

No dogma to adopt, no projection to attune to

Our world is laid with symbols — scientific, religious, political — and we cannot function without them. But one kind helps us build with precise calculation in the service of society, while another distorts reality so badly that the symbol introduced to explain cosmic order becomes more important than the cosmic phenomenon itself.

Humans have massacred each other arguing over these symbols, never once wanting to experience for themselves the interaction of cosmic order with their own being — to feel that energy directly, rather than accepting the political and religious symbols fed to them from birth inside their conditioning.

What I personally value in the I-Ching is that it is free of symbols that distort thought by forcing us to attune to man-made projections of cosmic order. In their place it allows creative individual expression in understanding one's own life. It facilitates self-reflection without tying you to any dogma. That is the highest degree of freedom one can have with respect to oneself.

The beauty of the I Ching is that its simplicity, grace, and power are easily missed by inattentive minds lost in seeking grandeur in illusions. P. K. Tiwari

The I-Ching course

Eight sessions covering the coin and yarrow-stalk methods, the structure of the sixty-four hexagrams, moving lines, and — the part that takes longest — how to read a casting without bending it toward what you wanted to hear.

You finish able to cast and read on your own, with a journalling practice that lets you check the work against your own life over months rather than minutes.

A note on journalling

The part that proves the practice, or fails to

I advise everyone on my course to journal their findings whenever they perform a casting. Date it, write the question exactly as you asked it, and write what you took the answer to mean that day. Read it back six months later. This is one of the most spiritual activities we can do to cultivate awareness, and it is the only honest way to find out whether the practice is doing anything for you.

The phenomenon at work here is synchronicity — the movement of universal consciousness that we can feel directly in our own lives, in communion with our actions.
